When it comes to common conditions that affect women and men, prevention (where possible) is better than cure, and early diagnosis helps to ensure the best possible health outcomes. Here's a summary of some of the most important routine screening checks that all women and men should keep up with to ensure their best health.
Maintaining good health requires the harmonious functioning of various bodily systems. It's important to note that feeling well doesn't always equate to being healthy, as some health issues may not present noticeable symptoms. To proactively manage your health, regular screening tests are crucial. Here are some key routine screenings to consider.
Yearly health check: A yearly health check allows for a comprehensive assessment of your overall health, including vital signs, blood tests and evaluations of various organ systems. This helps in early detection and prevention of potential health issues. If you have a chronic health condition, an annual health check enables your doctor to evaluate if your condition is stable and whether your treatment is still effective.
Pap smear: Recommended every three years for women, a Pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It detects abnormal cells in the cervix that could potentially develop into cancer if left untreated.
Mammogram: After the age of 40, it's recommended to have a mammogram every two years. This screening test is crucial for the early detection of breast cancer, which can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Prostate pathology test:Refers to a biopsy or other diagnostic procedures used to evaluate the prostate gland for abnormalities, such as cancer. This test is often performed when there are signs or symptoms suggesting a prostate issue, or if a prostate‑specific antigen (PSA) test indicates abnormal levels.
Regular screenings and check-ups play a vital role in identifying health issues early, even before symptoms appear. By staying proactive about your health and following recommended screening guidelines, you can better manage your wellbeing and address any potential concerns promptly.
